With a glorious history of over ninety years of providing quality education, YCYW has always maintained a pioneering spirit, actively exploring ways to integrate high-quality educational resources, and building bridges for students to the forefront of global technology. YCYW brings together world-class outstanding educational resources, including top institutions and research centres such as The University of Hong Kong, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Tongji University, Sun Yat-sen University, Oxford University’s Institute for Advanced Studies (Suzhou), and The Hong Kong Polytechnic University.

These rich and top-tier resources serve as a powerful driving force for leading educational innovation practices, greatly expanding the breadth and depth of education and paving a solid and broad path for students’ growth.

Recently, YCYW has exciting news: students from Grades 5 to 8 have embarked on a programming learning journey in collaboration with Harvard, undoubtedly injecting more vitality into the school’s technology education. Mr. Mullen, the Technology Subject Leader, expressed his excitement, saying, “This collaborative project has infused our technology education with tremendous energy.”

Grade 5: Scratch Enlightenment — Harvard Leads the First Journey into Programming

For Grade 5 students, studying Harvard’s CS50’s Introduction to Programming with Scratch course is like opening a magical door to the wondrous world of programming. Scratch, as a visual programming tool, is an ideal choice for programming beginners due to its intuitive, easy-to-understand, and fun features. By dragging and dropping colourful block-style code pieces, students can easily create animations, games, and interactive stories, sparking creativity and cultivating logical thinking through play.

The personal instruction by Harvard professors adds powerful professional expertise to the course. These professors possess profound knowledge and rich teaching experience in computer science, transforming complex programming concepts into engaging stories and examples. This enables students to grasp knowledge in a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere. Upon completion of the course, students will receive a certification issued by Harvard University, which not only highly recognizes their learning achievements but also serves as a strong credential for future academic and career development.

Grades 6 to 8: Advancing with Python — Harvard Supports In-Depth Exploration

Students in Grade 6 to 8 will take on the more challenging CS50’s Introduction to Programming with Python course. Python, a powerful and widely used programming language, holds a significant position in fields such as artificial intelligence, data analysis, and web development. Learning Python means students will delve into the core of programming and acquire key skills to solve real-world problems.

Under the guidance of Harvard professors, students will become brave explorers navigating the mysterious maze of Python, unravelling complex programming challenges. In class, a variety of hands-on projects will serve as stepping stones for their growth. They can design intelligent chatbots to experience the charm of artificial intelligence or develop small games to enhance practical programming skills. Mr. Mullen emphasized, “These project-based practices are crucial for cultivating students’ comprehensive abilities. The carefully designed projects by Harvard professors enable students to continuously grow and improve through practice.”

It is worth mentioning that the Harvard CS50 series courses are delivered virtually by Professor David Malan from Harvard. Professor Malan is renowned in the field of computer science education; his unique teaching style and extensive experience have made the Harvard CS50 courses highly acclaimed worldwide. YCYW students having the opportunity to learn from him is undoubtedly a rare and valuable learning experience.
